New Town Website

The Town of Cedar Fort, Utah has a new website. It can be found at www.townofcedarfort.com.
The site features news and events that affect the residents of the Town of Cedar Fort. As well as a feature to pay your town utility bill online.

Cedar Fort has events throughout the year that will appear in the news section and on the Town's Event Calendar.

Just added this week is an online virtual tour of the Old Cedar Valley Elementary School, which now serves as Cedar Fort Town Hall.

Future features may include a community forum to discuss relevant events, for local services offered to residents and a classified section for local items "for sale". (depending on community interest).

Back to School Part Deux

Continuing the "Back to School" theme today as I head back to my college classes.
This is the District School in Fairfield, Utah just west down route 73 about two miles. It was built in 1898 as you can see from the sign on the bell tower.
I don't believe it is still in use as a school but I could be wrong.
If you know for sure, please chime in.

Back to School

 

It is back to school week in Utah. What better way to emphasize this important week than to talk about Cedar Valley School. It was built in 1909 and remains the only remaining 2 room school house in Utah County. There are a few others statewide, but Cedar Fort has the last one in this county.

My son went to this school for 2 years (his 5th and 6th grades) he goes to 7th grade in Junior High school this year. Today the 7th graders go to school to learn their way around the school. They will experience the biggest transition going from Elementary School to Middle School (or Junior High) so they go in a day early. The rest of the school grades return tomorrow.

It is safe to say that a lot of the kids going to school today will have a bit of a culture shock, not just because they are going to Junior High but because they are going from a 103 year old school with 24 students in 6th grade to a middle school with over nine hundred 7th graders. 

Please be extra careful out there driving around today and tomorrow. School is back in session.

 

I can actually remember when schools used real school bells, not too unlike this one.

The Annual Cedar Fort Water Fight

An aquatic skirmish in the intersection near my home. The dark Ford delivered an effective broadside while the white Chevrolet dripped away down the street to fight other battles.

The annual Cedar Fort water fight is a tradition that happens each July 23rd and is said to have begun in the 1920's by a bunch of mischievous young men that had learned of a slumber party being attended by the young women of the town. The boys gathered up water in buckets from the town ditches and thoroughly doused the slumber party. 

Local boys taking their best shot. One of the water grenades struck me in the abdomen but bounced off harmlessly and exploded on the ground. Ha! I am waterproof!

The following July 23rd the girls returned the dousing in kind and so the tradition was born. It continues to this day, every July 23rd, as the young folks of Cedar Fort and neighboring towns prepare days in advance with coolers full of water balloons super-soaker water cannons and hoses with high pressure and long ranges. The better to reach out and drench someone. And by someone I mean anyone, because everyone is fair game, as I soon learned.

This young man cornered me when I was out photographing fire trucks for Fire Engine Friday. I was able to dodge the balloon and return home unscathed.

In three water fights I have had my car drenched and been hit with balloons twice, but I have yet to get wet. Having said that, I believe I may have just painted a target on my back for next year.
